SPIEGEL: Why do we waste so much time trying to complete things that can't be realistically completed?
Eco: We have a limit, a very discouraging, humiliating limit: death. That's why we like all the things that we assume have no limits and, therefore, no end. It's a way of escaping thoughts about death. We like lists because we don't want to die.
I love my lists. Period.
List-making keeps us organised in our lives, keeps us in check with our progress. It's awesome.
Just look at the hundreds of apps and programs out there, developed to help us with list-making, there must be a demand that gave rise to such supply! Not only that, think about your contact lists on your cellphones, your friends list in Facebook, your lists of folders/documents on your computers, and don't get me started on Personal Assistants (because these people make a living from helping you to make and keep lists and remind you about them from time to time) ... the list of lists is endless.
Okay, maybe those cultural theorists are right.
Just recently, I downloaded this app called, "iProcrastinate" (I think the name is ingenious), then I updated deadlines and included all the items needed to be done... yada yada... But the closest due date is tomorrow and all the items remain un-ticked.
What bullshit.
Well, I guess I find list-making to be therapeutic, not so much the items-ticking on a list.
Anyway, I'm compiling a list of things to do after exams, leading to ... say ... 31st of December.
Yes, I'm all about planning ahead. Yet, I don't mind some mix of spontaneity from time to time.
No. 1 thing that tops my list right now is..
Read a tear-jerking, heart-warming, aww-inducing novel.
I will start with this book sitting on my shelf. I've watched the movie but hopefully the book will be more touching than the adaptation.
To be honest, I can't remember the last time I'd read a novel and I would like to do that after all the academic reading is over.
Much love.
PS:
Looking at too many wedding photography blogs makes me want to be part of one.
Weddings, not photography blogs.
I shall wait.
PPS:
Don't worry. My essay is brewing and will be done, printed by tonight.
Tomorrow is a start of a better week.
They say thank God it's Friday but I always feel extra pumped and motivated on Mondays instead.
